Logbook, kept by C. H. Tucker, comprised of two whaling voyages. First voyage documents the Belvedere (Steam bark) of San Francisco, Calif., mastered by George F. Smith, from December 2, 1884 to November 9, 1885 to the Pacific and Arctic Oceans. Includes descriptions of whales and other marine life and game taken, accidents that resulted in injuries, deaths at sea, illnesses, a fight onboard, trading with natives, rescues, stowaways, taking on provisions, and refitting a new mast. Also contains whale stamps, a crew list, inventories of whale oil and bone, and a salvage of the ship Mabe's supplies and oil. The Belvedere took 4 of the Gazelle's shipwrecked men as well as 2 from the Mabel in 1885. During the voyage, Domingo Carter died of a heart attack, while Jim Kanaka (a stowaway) died as well. The keeper notes several instances throughout the log where ice damaged the vessel. Whaling grounds include On the Line and the Arctic grounds. Second voyage documents the Belvedere (Steam bark) of New Bedford, Mass., mastered by G.W. Bassett and then Joseph Whiteside,from November 28 , 1889 to November 22, 1890 to the Pacific and Arctic Oceans. Includes descriptions of whales seen or taken, a death at sea, illnesses, mutinous behavior, trading with natives, punishment, and rescuing men from the bark Eliza's shipwreck off St. Lawrence Island. Also contains whale stamps and inventories of whale oil and bone. Early in the voyage, Peter Corragan died of an apparent heart attack. Multiple men were reported to duty drunk. The keeper reported a leaking boiler. While in the Arctic, the log reports dealing with ice flows and members of the crew mining coal for the vessel. Whaling grounds include the Galapagos, Hawaiian Islands, Anadyr Sea, Arctic Ocean, and Herschel Island grounds. Managing agent, William Lewis; built in Bath, Maine, 1880.
